Frequently Asked Questions
-
Under AS 2550.9, a vehicle hoist needs a pre-operational check before each shift, a routine maintenance inspection by a competent person at intervals no greater than three months, and a thorough annual inspection within twelve months of being placed in service or of the last annual. Major inspections fall due at ten, twenty and twenty-five years. TWSA schedules and documents each one so your records stay audit-ready.
-
A competent person, typically a trade-qualified fitter or mechanic with specific training and experience on the type of hoist being inspected. An operator can complete the pre-operational check, but the three-monthly, annual and major inspections must be done by a competent person. TWSA’s technicians are trained to AS 2550.9 and issue a documented inspection record for every visit.
-
AS 2550.9 is the Australian Standard for the safe use of vehicle hoists. It sets the inspection intervals, maintenance, operator responsibilities and competent-person requirements that keep a hoist safe and compliant in service. It works alongside the manufacturer’s instructions. Meeting it is how a workshop demonstrates duty of care under WHS law if a hoist is ever involved in an incident.
-
A service is the maintenance work, lubrication, adjustments, wear checks and parts replacement, that keeps a hoist running safely. An inspection is the formal assessment against AS 2550.9 that records whether the hoist is fit for continued use. You need both: servicing prevents failure, inspection produces the evidence an auditor or insurer will ask for. TWSA delivers them together on one documented visit.
-
Non-compliant hoists expose the business and its officers to real risk: a SafeWork notice or shutdown, a voided insurance claim after an incident, and personal liability under the WHS Act’s due-diligence duty. The gap is usually not the equipment, it’s the absence of a current, documented inspection record. TWSA closes that gap with a scheduled maintenance programme and an audit-ready evidence trail.
-
Cost depends on the hoist type, capacity, age, how many units are on site, and whether the service is combined with inspection. Rather than a flat rate, TWSA quotes after understanding your equipment and compliance position, so you are not paying for work you do not need or missing work you do. Request a site assessment for a quote tailored to your workshop.
